From a spiritual view point, Matthew is a 'panda' (scholar-devotee) who has practiced Zen Buddhism in the Soto manner for over thirty years. While an American benefiting from the interdisciplinary character of Western Buddhism, his root practice is with the Japanese lineages of Shunryu Suzuki-roshi and Zen Master Ikkyu. As a monk, he practiced with several root and flower communities in the United States and Europe, including Zen Center and Plum Village. Matthew has enjoyed the great blessing of sitting with such renowned teachers as Richard Baker-roshi, the Venerable Thich Hanh, and has been honored with titles from both Mahayana and Theravadan traditions.
