The following two sentences were separated by an intervening paragraph:

"In 1638, the fief and castle passed to a junior branch of the ruling Tokugawa

....

"In 1638, the fief and castle were reassigned to a branch of the Matsudaira clan, relatives of the ruling Tokugawa clan."

I will combine them, as the first editor had probably meant to do. I hope the result is accurate.
