[edit] Early life

Matthew went to Xavier College in Melbourne, Australia. He excelled in the performing arts. Graduated from NIDA in 1998 with a degree of Performing Arts (Acting). Matthew is a natural redhead from his father.

[edit] Acting

Matthew has performed in Australia and abroad on stage, in TV and movies, including co-starring with Pia Miranda in the film adaptation of the popular teen novel, Looking For Alibrandi. Probably his most recognisable international role was in the American science fiction show Farscape as the character Jothee.

In 2002 Matthew won a Logie for his role in the television series Changi. In 2006, he appeared in the first and second seasons of television show Thank God You're Here. Newton is also starring in a new TV series for TV1 called Stupid, Stupid Man set in the office of a fictional men's magazine called COQ where he plays Nick Driscoll, the Features Writer. The 8-episode series was launched on Tuesday 14 November 2006 at 9:30pm AEST with 2 episodes back-to-back.

[edit] New Year's Eve 2006

Newton appeared on The Big Night In with John Foreman on Network Ten which aired between the 9pm and midnight fireworks coverage, where he engaged in simulated sex acts, other suggestive activity as well as bad language. The Daily Telegraph described the programme as "sub-standard coverage" and "the worst ever."[1]

[edit] Personal life

In 2006, Newton split with long time girlfriend, Australian actress Brooke Satchwell. The relationship with Satchwell ended on bad terms, leading to Newton being arrested on October 16, 2006 and charged with intimidation and assault occasioning actual bodily harm over incidents alleged to have occurred on September 13, 2006 and October 6, 2006. Reportedly Newton repeatedly punched her in the head on more than one occasion and attempted to gouge her eyes and face. He had denied the charges. A court hearing took place in his absence on January 17, 2007.[2][3] Following a not guilty plea, presented by solicitor Chris Murphy, his matter was adjourned until 31 January 2007.[4]

A three-day hearing has been set for June 4. Twelve witnesses are expected to give evidence on behalf of Satchwell while four witnesses will appear for Newton. Newton's bail was continued on the conditions that he must be of good behaviour, comply with an apprehended violence order, and not go within 100m of any place where Satchwell may live or work.[5]

Newton has since started dating Gracie Otto (daughter of Australian actor Barry Otto).[6]

[edit] Radio career

Newton was sacked from his new role at Nova on 15 January 2007 which had recently signed on Newton to co-host the Matt and Akmal Show with comedian Akmal Saleh in the prime time drive shift on Friday. The Daily Telegraph had confirmed that Newton had announced the radio station had released him from his contract, reportedly worth up to $200,000 a year.[7]

The station suspended his involvement in the broadcasts, which were due to begin on 15 January, after allegations were made public that Newton had assaulted Brooke Satchwell.

[edit] Quotes

  • "A teacher at NIDA taught me - it's about acting but it can apply to life - that you shouldn't try to control things that are outside your control because that will make you lose control of everything. You just have to get on and do it and be true to yourself."[citation needed]
  • "They taught me a sense of honesty, particularly my mum. She's very upfront. I remember the opening night of Assassins at NIDA and I had a lead role. The show went really well and I joined the crowd afterwards and I saw Mum crossing the foyer. She'd just arrived in Sydney and she walked straight up to me and I put my arms out. And the first thing she said was, 'You don't call that an opening night outfit, look at those pants.' Then she hugged me and said, 'You were very good.' She just had to get it off her chest."[citation needed]
