Matthew began his playing career at Souths Utd from U7 - U18. From there he was asked to play for the state team in the Australian national league. He played 5 seasons there playing centre midfield.

[edit] Liverpool FC

In 2002, aged just 19, he was asked to trial for Leeds FC, Birmingham FC, and Liverpool FC. He was successful in gaining a youth position at all three clubs, but chose his personally favourite team, Liverpool FC. While he played in the youth team the young gun played with Steven Gerrard in a pre-season match against West Brom.
