Matthew Carrington (student)

Matthew Carrington (November 10, 1983February 2, 2005), was a student at California State University, Chico, who was killed during a hazing incident at the Chi Tau fraternity house. The cause of death was water intoxication.

Seven men (Richard Joseph Hirth, 23; Michael Fernandes, 20; Trent Stiefvater, 21; Gabriel John Maestretti, 22; Jerry Ming Lim, 25; Carlos James DeVilla Abrille, 22; and John Paul Fickes, 20) were charged in connection with his death. Maestretti, Lim, Abrille, and Fickes pleaded guilty as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors; all were sentenced to jail time, ranging from 90 days to one year. Hirth and Fernandes pleaded nolo contendere and received shorter sentences, as did Stiefvater, who pleaded guilty. In addition, a wrongful death suit has been filed.
