Matthew Bannister (musician)

Matthew Bannister is a New Zealand musician. His early career was spent in Dunedin, where he was lead singer and songwriter for Sneaky Feelings. After moving to Auckland in 1989 he formed Dribbling Darts of Love. Both bands had music released on the Flying Nun record label. He has also worked briefly with The Mutton Birds.
Bannister's book - Positively George Street - about his time in a band during the height of the "Dunedin Sound" movement was published in 1999.
He has a PhD in Film, TV and Media Studies from the University of Auckland, having been a student there 1998-2003. His thesis was titled White Man's Soul: pakeha masculinities in popular music of New Zealand / Aotearoa.
Kiwi Blokes: Recontextualising White New Zealand Masculinities in a Global Setting by Matthew Bannister was published in Genders Journal, Issue 42, 2005.
He is now working at the Waikato Institute of Technology (WINTEC) in the School of Media Arts.
