Matthew Jacob Miller (b. November 23, 1971, in Greenwood, Mississippi) is a right-handed relief pitcher for the Cleveland Indians. In his four-year Major League career he has played for the Colorado Rockies (2003) and the Cleveland Indians (2004-2006). He is noted for his distinct side-arm delivery.
Miller got his start in professional baseball in 1996 playing for the Greenville Bluesmen in the independent Big South League and Texas-Louisiana League. He was signed by the Texas Rangers in December 1997 and played in their minor league system for the Savannah Sand Gnats (1998), Charlotte Rangers (1999), Tulsa Drillers (1999-2000) and Oklahoma RedHawks (2000). In 2001, he played for the Portland Beavers (the San Diego Padres' AAA affiliate). He signed with the Oakland Athletics after the 2001 season and played for their AAA affiliate, the Sacramento River Cats, in 2002. Matt finally made his Major League debut with the Rockies in 2003. After that season, he signed with the Indians, where he would find his first significant major-league playing time.
Matt's best season came in 2004 when he was 4-1 with a 3.09 ERA, 55 strikeouts, 23 walks and 1 save in 57 relief appearances with the Indians. In 2005 and 2006, injuries severely limited his playing time. He underwent surgery to repair the flexor tendon in the elbow of his throwing arm in April 2006. Now healthy, he is projected to make the Cleveland Indians out of spring training in 2007.
