Matt Hume

Matt Hume (July 14, 1966) is an American mixed martial arts fighter. He currently trains fighters for the Ultimate Fighting Championship and PRIDE.

Matt Hume, known as "The Wizard" by his fans and peers, is widely considered to be one of the most well rounded and versatile experts in the world. Not only is Matt a world champion in Submission wrestling, but also the undefeated pay per view Battlecade Extreme fighting champion. Matt remains undefeated in Kickboxing and Muay Thai as well, where he was the North American champion before retiring that title. Matt's accomplishments and skills are world renowned as a fighter; however, he is among the most versatile and respected businessmen in the martial arts. Matt is the owner and head instructor of the AMC martial arts center, where he has trained numerous legitimate world champions in all forms of combat sports. He is also the only known example of a successful promoter, sanctioning body president and founder, major event referee, major event judge, pay per view television commentator, MMA journalist, MMA reporter and author of his own ongoing column in FCFighter newspaper.

Hume is the son of a policeman, whose father briefly trained with Bruce Lee. He graduated from Lake Washington High School, later receiving his college degree in business from Central Washington University.^[1] He is also a born-again Christian, but has no problems reconciling his sport with his faith; “I know what I’m doing out there is right…I’m not out there to hurt somebody. I’m a good role model for the community. It’s something I’m doing as a witness for the Lord.” ^[2]

Since stepping back from active competition, Hume has moved to new roles in his chosen sport; he is a successful trainer, referee, journalist and commentator.^[3] Hume is also the owner and head instructor of the American Martial Arts Center (AMC), which counts fighters like Josh Barnett, Bob Sapp, Chris Leben and Akira Shoji amongst its membership.

Matt Hume holds wins in Extreme fighting over formerly undefeated world Shooto champion Eric Paulson and formerly unbeaten Ultimate fighting champion Pat Militech. Matt Hume also defeated formerly unbeaten Extreme fighting champion and Olympic gold medalist Kenny Monday by submission in only 45 seconds in the main event of the pay per view world submission wrestling championships "The Contenders".

Matt Hume's grappling talents impressed the Prince, Sheik tahnoun Bin Zayed Al Nayhan of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates so much, that the Prince requested that Matt come to Abu Dhabi to personnaly train him and his combat team. Shortly after Matt trained him and his team, the Prince was inspired to start the now famous Abu Dhabi submission wrestling championships. Matt participated in the inaugural event, winning all of his matches, but withdawing after his semi final victory on the doctor's recommendation after a ruptured acl injury.

Hume’s last fight was a win against Shawn Peters by armbar, at Hook n Shoot Absolute Fighting Championships 1, December 13, 2002.

Matt is the current rule director and official trainer to the PRIDE Fighting Championships.×
