Matt Deis

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Matthew Christopher Deis (born December 13th, 1983 in Peterborough, New Hampshire) is a professional musician. A former fixture of the Western Massachusetts-based metal band All That Remains, Matt's unique brand of bass playing is now being heard in Philadelphia's CKY.

Matt lived in New Hampshire until the age of four until his family moved to West Springfield, Massachusetts. He has been involved with music since he was very young. He has played the piano ever since he was 5 years old, and picked up the clarinet in elementary school. By the time he got to junior high school, he begged his parents for a guitar and started his first band, Nameless Fear. He played in Nameless Fear from the ages of 13-17. He eventually left to play bass for the band Lost Inside a Rubix Cube (who later changed their name to The Amber Fashion). Matt started taking guitar lessons from the lead guitar player of All That Remains, and eventually started playing bass for the band. During his time in All That Remains, Deis co-wrote and played bass on their album This Darkened Heart. World touring with such bands as Gwar, Slipknot, As I Lay Dying, and Killswitch Engage followed.

In 2005, Deis jumped at the chance to be the bass player for CKY. He has since toured across America and Europe with the band. The band continues to tour in support of their latest album An Ånswer Can Be Found. He has been a part of the writing process since joining, and according to the band's official website's frequently asked questions, "Since obtaining Matt Deis as a bassist, the rest of the band have stated that Deis will write and record on the next CKY album."

On November 4, 2005 he was married in a private ceremony to Erica Beckmann by Reverend James A. Rota of the band Fireball Ministry, followed by a bigger and more formal wedding with family and friends on May 6, 2006 in Connecticut.

For CKY's touring set up, Deis plays Ibanez basses (specifically the SR905 and 1005 series, though he claims to use a six-string infrequently) , Ernie Ball Stingray 5 (fretless and fretted), and Dean electric-upright basses through a Peavey Pro Wireless, a Genz Benz GBE1200 Head, a GBE600 head, two Genz Benz XB2 4x10s, and two Genz Benz XB2 1x15s. Unlike CKY's previous live bassist, Vern Zaborowski, he does not use a pick.

According to Matt's personal website, He cites Rudy Sarzo, Marcus Miller, Paul McCartney, Stanley Clarke, Billy Gould, and Sting as his main influences. He also holds a degree in Music Performance from Holyoke Community College in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Matt has been very vocal against musicians who use cheap gimmicks to get famous yet lack the talent to back it up.
