Matt Cooke (politician)

Matthew William Cooke, commonly known as Matt Cooke, (born February 5, 1981) is a British Labour Party politician, currently a councillor in the London Borough of Haringey, representing Bounds Green ward.
Cooke was elected on May 5th 2006 with the largest share of the vote in Bounds Green Ward. Cooke is Deputy Member for Crime and Community Safety on the Council, Chair of the Wood Green Area Assembly and Deputy Chair of the Council's Scrutiny Committee.

Prior to standing for local government, in 2004 Cooke was elected President of the University of London Union (ULU), the federal Union of the 140,000 students studying with the colleges and institues of the University of London. Whilst President at ULU Cooke was made an Olympic Ambassador for the successful London 2012 bid for London to host the 2012 Olympic Games and also a non-executive director of the Student Union's National Trading Consortium NUS Services Ltd. as Director Without Portfolio - an elected position he held for two consecutive years.
During this time (from 2003 to 2005) Cooke was also active within the National Union of Students (NUS) firstly within the 'Organised Independents' faction and then increasingly as overtly alligned with (if not a member of) the National Organisation of Labour Students or NOLS.
Prior to his Presidency at the University of London Union, Cooke was a student of Classical Violin at the Royal Academy of Music in Marylebone, London from 1999 to 2004. In 2003 he was elected Sabbatical President of the Royal Academy of Music Students' Union or RAMSU.
Cooke is openly gay.
