Mathmo

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mathmo or MathMo is a term used in British University slang for one who studies Mathematics.

The term likely derives from Oxbridge, being used in both Oxford [1] and Cambridge[2] Universities. In addition the term has been used by students from other institutions with strong mathematical reputation, such as its use by Jamie from University of Warwick on the UK series of Beauty and the Geek.

Etymologically the term may be an abbreviated form of Mathematical Tripos. Other related terms include CompSci (Computer Science, pronounced as comp-skee) and NatSci (Natural Sciences, not used at Oxford since no course with that title exists there).
