The Princess forms of the Sailor Senshi are an incarnation of the main characters from the popular Sailor Moon metaseries. These are the senshi as they lived during the Silver Millennium, ruling their own home planets and united under Queen Serenity of the Moon. They are sometimes pictured in their ordinary Senshi uniforms, but creator Naoko Takeuchi has also drawn them in unique gowns, as in the Materials Collection.

The duties of the senshi/princesses varied. Princess Serenity, the original incarnation of Sailor Moon, was crown princess and heir to the throne. Princesses Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus (referred to by English-speaking fans as "Inner Senshi") were primarily responsible for her protection, with Venus serving as their leader. The "Outer Senshi," Princesses Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, were charged with protecting the solar system itself from outside threats, with Pluto specifically guarding the gate of Time. Princess Saturn's exact whereabouts during the Silver Millennium are unknown; as the Soldier of Silence, her coming heralds the end of the world. She does not appear alongside the other senshi until well after they are all reincarnated on Earth.

The future child of Serenity and Endymion (Usagi Tsukino and Mamoru Chiba) is Chibiusa, or Princess Usagi Small Lady Serenity. Because she is often included among the other senshi in Takeuchi's princess sketches, it is very likely that the senshi resume these forms during the reign of Neo-Queen Serenity in Crystal Tokyo.

The Princesses only appear in the manga, though they are referred to once in the anime by Luna.

[edit] Princess Serenity

(especially the Serenity section)

Serenity, named for her mother, was the crown princess of the Moon Kingdom. She had a loving, adventurous personality, and was fascinated by the Earth. She would occasionally sneak away to explore it, particularly after she met and fell in love with the prince of Earth, Endymion.

This relationship between people from different worlds was forbidden, and caused great anxiety on both their worlds. This was the catalyst that led to the uprising led by Queen Beryl and the destruction of the Silver Millennium. However, just before Queen Serenity died, she caused all the Senshi to be reborn on Earth. In particular, the Prince and Princess were given the opportunity to be born on the same planet, so that this time, they might find happiness.

[edit] Princess Mercury

Main article: Ami Mizuno

Representative of Mercury, she was one of the four guardians of Serenity. She lived on the Moon, and was said to be the wisest of the four. A drawing by Naoko Takeuchi depicts her in the arms of Zoisite. Alongside this piece, in the Original Picture Collection, Takeuchi says, "I was thinking of love stories of the previous lives of these couples. I'd like to be able to draw that someday..." No further evidence of a romantic link between Mercury and Zoisite exists, however.

  • Home Castle (manga): Mariner Castle
  • Gown color: Light blue

[edit] Princess Mars

Main article: Rei Hino

Princess Mars was the secondary leader of Serenity's four protectors. Like the others, she lived on the Moon and helped look after the princess. In the drawing with the four Senshi and four Generals, she is paired with Jadeite.

  • Guardian planet: Mars
  • Home Castle (manga): Phobos Castle
  • Gown color: Red

[edit] Princess Jupiter

Main article: Makoto Kino

The strongest of the four "Inner" Senshi, the princess of Jupiter helped to protect Princess Serenity and the Moon Kingdom. She is paired with Nephrite in Naoko Takeuchi's drawing.

  • Guardian planet: Jupiter
  • Home Castle (manga): Io Castle
  • Gown color: Green

[edit] Princess Venus

Main article: Minako Aino

Princess Venus was the leader of Serenity's protectors. When they were all reborn on Earth, she even disguised herself as the Moon Princess for a time, in order to protect Usagi. In the manga, Sailor Venus is the one to reactivate the Moon Sword, which was given to the four to defend the Princess and the Kingdom. In the Generals/Senshi drawing, she is pictured with Kunzite, the leader of the Shitennou.

  • Guardian planet: Venus
  • Home Castle (manga): Magellan Castle
  • Gown color: Yellow

[edit] Princess Uranus

Main article: Haruka Tenoh

Princess Uranus was one of the Senshi with the responsibility of protecting the Solar System. She therefore remained mostly on her own planet. She was probably in love with Princess Neptune during the Silver Millennium.

(There is a common rumor among fans that the ruler of this planet was in fact a 'Prince' Uranus. This was invented in an attempt to explain away the reborn Haruka's attraction to Michiru (Sailor Neptune), and despite being false, is still widely prevalent among English-speaking fans.)

  • Guardian planet: Uranus
  • Home Castle (manga): Miranda Castle
  • Gown color: Dark blue

[edit] Princess Neptune

Main article: Michiru Kaioh

Princess Neptune remained in the outer Solar System during the Silver Millennium, helping to protect the system from alien threats. She had a good relationship with the other Senshi and was probably already in love with Princess Uranus.

  • Guardian planet: Neptune
  • Home Castle (manga): Triton Castle
  • Gown color: Sea-green

[edit] Princess Pluto

Main article: Setsuna Meioh

Like the other "Outer" Senshi, Princess Pluto remained on her own planet during the Silver Millennium. Because of her position as Guardian of Time, it is possible that she did not defend against alien threats so much as the others, but rather exclusively cared for the Time Gate.

Sailor Pluto was much older than the other Senshi, and unlike them, was not reborn as a human. Instead, she took on a human alias in order to join them on Earth.

  • Guardian planet: Pluto
  • Home Castle (manga): Charon Castle
  • Gown color: Black

[edit] Princess Saturn

Main article: Hotaru Tomoe

Princess Saturn is the most mysterious of all the Senshi. Her dominion is Silence, and she only appears when the destruction of a world is at hand. This is so much a part of her that, according to the manga, when the Silver Millennium had come to an end, Saturn was summoned from her home. The other Senshi looked on helplessly as she brought down her Glaive and destroyed what remained of the Moon Kingdom.

Even when reborn as Hotaru, Sailor Saturn has a different relationship with her human form than the others seem to. They are sometimes more like separate people than alter-egos.

  • Guardian planet: Saturn
  • Home Castle (manga): Titan Castle
  • Gown color: Purple

[edit] Princess Usagi Small Lady Serenity

Main article: Chibiusa

Serenity and Endymion's daughter--named for her mother, but ordinarily called Small Lady--is not born until after the modern-day story of Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon takes place. She occasionally visits from the future, however, and dreams of being a beautiful lady like her mother. She has a very close relationship with Sailor Pluto.

It is unknown whether Small Lady inherits the kingdom and/or becomes the future Sailor Moon.

  • Guardian planet: The Moon (and possibly Earth)
  • Home: Crystal Tokyo
  • Gown color: Light pink

[edit] Note on Guardians

The theme of four protectors and one leader (inspired by the anime tradition of the five-member sentai) is recurrent in the Sailor Moon series. Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus are of course the four protectors of Sailor Moon. In the manga, Prince Endymion also has his four guardians, namely the Shitennou (Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoisite, and Kunzite). Less well-known is the existence of Chibiusa's four guardians, who are the Sailor Quartet (Asteroid Senshi) of the manga.
