[edit] Succession box
- DIscussion moved from Talk:Route 140 (Massachusetts)…
The succesion box (template:masr) doesn't work:
Massachusetts numbered routes | ||
---|---|---|
Preceded by 139 |
140 | Succeeded by 141 |
The roads don't succeed each other. Route 140 doesn't come after 139 or before 141.
We need something like Template:Interstates:
Interstate Highways (multiples of 5 in pink) | Main||||||||||||||||

- That's just too big for state highways. It's only manageable for Interstates because we only have 2DIs. --SPUI (talk - don't use sorted stub templates!) 12:06, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

- Good point. So what to do? The succession box is clearly not correct. —Mark Adler (markles) 14:03, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

- Why isn't it? It's the only ordering that makes sense. --SPUI (talk - don't use sorted stub templates!) 14:33, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

- It's not correct because Route 140 is not "Preceded by" Route 139 or "Succeeded by" Route 141. These three routes have no important relation to each other.
- I agree with you that some sort of navigational box would be handy. But an incumbent series format isn't right. Perhaps this is one of those situations where the solution isn't good, but the alternatives are worse ("democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms.")
- Somehow I think a navigational template like Template:Interstates might give us some guidance even if we don't copy it verbatim. I just don't know.—Mark Adler (markles) 15:27, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
- Then what about what we have at the bottom of Interstate 5 for example? --Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 03:24, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
- That's the exact same thing, just smaller. --SPUI (talk - don't use sorted stub templates!) 13:22, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

Okay, I'm still not convinced, but I'm coming around slowly. :) I've seen one other state try something like this. California. But they used an infobox and lots and lots of info in it! Whew! Check it out as it's used here: California State Route 1. Can you imagine Mass roads getting this kind of information. Californians really like to drive. I remain unconvinced of succession boxes here because route 140, for example, does not come between routes 139 and 141. In fact, it has no relation to either of them other than the sheer cooincidence of their sequential numbers. The interstate box (displayed above) is better, but it would be way too big if filled with Mass. routes. Really I don't know what to do. —Mark Adler (markles) 20:13, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
- CA was the first one to do the routeboxes but it's not the only state... WA, KY, NH, TX soon followed, along with Interstates and U.S. Routes... but anyway... and yes you can start one if interested... but um the succession boxes are helpful in maintenance of pages... and for roadgeeks really interested in the highway system. --Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 20:16, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
