The Master Librarian (図書館の主 Toshokan no Aruji?) is a merchant from Konami's Castlevania video game series. He appears as a non-playable character in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which was published on the PlayStation in 1997.

[edit] Character history

The Librarian is an eerily jolly and rotund old man who is the caretaker of Dracula's Long Library, the storehouse in which the Count keeps his vast collection of enchanted and forbidden pieces of literature. In-game he acts as a merchant, buying precious stones found in the castle and selling the player items and bits of information.

When the player first meets the Librarian, he seems to be rather loyal to Dracula, chiding Alucard for going against his master's plan and attempting to convince the warrior to return to Dracula's side. However, his complicity was easily bought when Alucard offered him money and jewels for his aid.

After this first meeting, Alucard can then buy or find library cards that will transport the player to the Long Library, just outside of the Librarian's quarters. Skilled players often find warping with the library cards to be a faster alternative to backtracking, as the Long Library is very close to the central hub of the castle. However, using a library card while in the game's upside-down castle will transport you to the normal castle's Long Library, not the inverted Library.
