Mast (botany)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mast is the edible seed and fruit produced by trees or shrubs that wildlife species will consume. It comes in two forms.
[edit] Hard mast
Tree species such as oak, hickory and beech produce a hard mast - acorns, beechnuts, and hazelnuts.
[edit] Soft mast
Other tree and shrub species such as poplars, cherry trees, plum trees, serviceberry shrubs, sumacs, dogwoods, willows, and buffaloberries produce a soft mast - leaf buds, catkins, true berries, drupes, and rose hips.
