Massey, New Zealand

Massey is a suburb of Waitakere City, one of the four cities that make up the Auckland conurbation in northern New Zealand. The suburb was named after former Prime Minister of New Zealand William Massey.

It is home to Massey High School as well as several Primary schools. However, confusingly, it is not home to the University of the same name. The suburb features a relatively new Leisure Centre and Library as well as the Westgate shopping complex at the end of the north-western motorway and is set to be extended significantly to the north in the near future[1].

Home to many musicians including Blindspott members and independent record label 7th End Productions. Music has been an expression of the youth for many years all through out Massey, holding many open mic nights at the YMCA, as well as many street battles (emceeing) uniting teens of all ages bringing them together and expressing there point of view. Local Rapper Po'Wit (Poetic Artist) has released two street level CDs boasting about being born and raised in a well know Hip Hop fueled area for 20 years. Just like any other culture and/or sport Rap music is definitely a long running choice for youth in Massey

The local rugby club is a member of the North Harbour Rugby Union and won the championship in 2005. Former All Black Jonah Lomu signed to play for Massey in 2005 but due to an injury was unable to play for them that season. He has however made his debut for the club in 2006 where despite winning the round robin Massey were knocked out in the first week of the playoffs.

In Parliament Massey is represented by Te Atatu MP Chris Carter and Helensville MP John Key. It is the centre of the local body ward of the same name that elects multiple councilors.
