Route 79 is a semi-rural highway in Southeastern Massachusetts.

The highway starts at Interstate 195 and travels north, merging with Route 24 around Exit 7 (Fall River). From here it runs concurrently with Route 24 North until Exit 9 (Assonet). South of, and including, the Route 24 portion, Route 79 is a freeway, but not up to Interstate Highway standards. At Exit 9, Route 79 leaves Route 24 and follows South Main Street north into Assonet Village.

In Assonet, the highway turns down Elm Street, then bears left onto Mill Street. At the intersection of Mill and Walnut Streets and Forge and Richmond Roads, the highway bears left on Richmond and continues on this main road. It intersects with County Road in Berkley which is the former Route 140. From this intersection, it continues straight through Berkley and into Taunton, where it intersects with the current Route 140.

From here, the road travels along (and is) the Taunton-Lakeville border until Precinct Street. It turns north off of Precinct Street and follows Rhode Island Road through Lakeville. It ends at Route 105 at the Lakeville-Middleborough border, a few hundred feet shy of the intersection of Route 105 with Route 25/Interstate 495
