Route 131, the extension of Connecticut Route 131 into Massachusetts, forms parts of Main Street and is the major east-west thoroughfare in Sturbridge and Southbridge, Massachusetts. It also connects those towns to Thompson, Connecticut, through West Dudley, Massachusetts.

Route 131 passes under Interstate 84 in Sturbridge, but does not have direct access to it. The road's junction with U.S. Route 20 is less than a mile from that route's exit on I-84 (exit 3) and the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90); and I-84's exit 2, also nearby, is signed "to Route 131" via Haynes Street, the former Route 15.

As a two-lane, undivided highway for its entire length, Route 131 intersects two state highways at grade in Southbridge. It meets Route 198 (Elm Street) downtown, and runs multiplexed with Route 169 from the American Optical rotary (Main, Mechanic and East Main streets) to North Woodstock Road, where Route 169 branches south.

Route 131 crosses no major roads in Dudley, although it connects with Connecticut Route 197 -- an extension of Massachusetts Route 197 -- only a few feet past the Connecticut border, in the Quinebaug neighborhood of Thompson.
