Mascara, Algeria

Mascara (also known by its Arabic name Muaskar) is a city in the northwest of Algeria. It serves as the capital of the province with the same name and has a population of about 110,000. It was also the home of Abd al-Qadir the famous prince who stood up against the French in the 19th century.
On August 18, 1994, an earthquake of magnitude 5.6 on the Richter scale shook the city, killing 171 persons.
