From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This user has decided to leave Wikipedia.

Cleaning up my departure dating back to mid-Oct.

I have less time than I used to. I also think that Wikipedia is becoming less and less effective, for various reasons, including

  • Increasing "battles" between different elements of the community
  • Excessive importance to details of policy making the atmosphere increasingly challenging for idealistic newcomers
  • Increasing damage by cranks and naive users at the expense of experts (note this is not vandalism, which is easily found and reverted, but more insidious)

I continue to respect and admire Wikipedia, both the ideals and what it has managed to achieve, and I continue to have faith in community-generated knowledge development and hope that at some point we will learn how to do it better. Martinp 15:19, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Newyorkbrad's RfA

Thank you for your support on my RfA, which closed favorably this morning, as well as for your thoughtful comments accompanying your !vote, to which I have given a good deal of thought. I appreciate the confidence the community has placed in me and am looking forward to my new responsibilities. Please let me know if ever you have any comments or suggestions, especially as I am learning how to use the tools. Best regards, Newyorkbrad 20:45, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Addendum: Only after hitting send did I note your departure notice above, and check your contributions reflecting that your support for me was one of very few recent contributions. I am sorry you felt moved to leave the project, am pleased that you found supporting me something worth temporarily returning for, and would be glad to hear if there is anything that I or anything else could do that would lead to your enjoying Wikipedia again. [edit] Current level of activity

Yes, I am making the occasional edit. I've actually continued to use WP as a resource even while "retired", and made small edits when appropriate. I do continue to believe in the WP ideal. But I still see enough that bugs me that I don't intend to truly invest time in WP in the near future. I will occasionally make some edits, and may comment on random policy issues that catch my eye, and truly wish WP and its community the best. Martinp 20:54, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
