[edit] Mediation Cabel Request

Hey there. I see you filed a request for Mediation... but it is mostly blank. Here's the case page. I'm not sure what needs mediation here... did an article get deleted? By whom? Is this about an external site, or is it something on Wikipedia? You can just reply here, and I'll try to help you figure out what you need. --Mechcozmo 03:24, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Ah, okay, I think I see what is going on here. You linked to a website that you own. This interferes with a few Wikipedia protocols. See Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. Pending more information on what actually happened, I'm going to close the case page. --Mechcozmo 18:20, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
If I didn't own, does that make a difference?! MarkMayhew
Well... yes. An article specifically about your website where people might pay you isn't seen to be in good taste. However, on Wikipedia's article about wikis a mention of your site might be better. Basically, you don't want it to look like you are advertising for yourself. Don't take this to mean that you cannot edit anything because you own a website; you just have to walk a fine line when working on articles closely related to what you do business in. (Wiki hint: including a colon ":" before your response will indent your response in, to show that you are referring to the comment above you.) --Mechcozmo 01:22, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on MarkMayhew, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Tonywalton  | Talk 17:59, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

The page you edited, User:Tonywalton, is my "user" page. You are as entitled to one as I am - see, there it is. What you are not entitled to (and nor am I) is an article in the main encyclopædia. Mark Mayhew is not the same as User:Markmayhew, and Tony Walton is very definitely not the same as User:Tonywalton (The one with the article is not the same person as me). By the way, it's usual to put messages on peoples' "talk pages", that's User talk:Markmayhew or User talk:Tonywalton, not the user page itself. Hope that clears things up! Regards, Tonywalton  | Talk 18:16, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

You have a good point, and frankly it's me that was at fault. I apologise. In fact I meant to put the following on here:

Hello! Mark Mayhew is not the appropriate place to post information about yourself, because it is in the part of Wikipedia where encyclopaedic articles are written. A "userpage" at User:Markmayhew, however, is available for personal information about yourself. When adding personal information please remember that Wikipedia is not myspace. Your userpage is for anything that is compatible with the Wikipedia project. It is a mistake to think of it as a homepage: Wikipedia is not a blog, webspace provider, or social networking site. Please see Wikipedia:Introduction and Wikipedia:User page for more information.

Which is a bit more friiendly. My screwup entirely. Trouble is, it sometimes gets a bit hectic on here with big backlogs of articles which qualify for speedy deletion (see this for the currently-tagged bunch, which somebody will have to dig through) and I put on the wrong message. Apologies again!

So, after all that, here's a welcome message for new users

Welcome!

Hello, Markmayhew, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome!

By the way, you mentioned in your message You are an editor, is that what makes you "notable"?!, Nonononono. You're an editor, I'm an editor, everybody on here is an editor. You might have meant "admin" (also known as "sysop") — that doesn't make me notable either. An admin is just an editor who has a couple of extra buttons on their browser screen (three, to be exact. Admins can (1) delete articles, (2) protect articles against editing, and (3) block vandals, over and above what anyone else can do. Big deal). "Notable" is a technical ter

m on Wikipedia - see this page for details.

Hopefully that all makes sense!

Good Yuletide to you and yours. Tonywalton  | Talk 23:25, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Helpme!

{{helpme}} I'm in a new tiff with wikipedia: see my profile, a wiki i posted, http://nola.pbwiki.com , got deleted, as spam. I want to contest, but how?

Hi, could you tell us on which article you added the link? As a general rule, our External Links Policy is tough since we try to have only links that are really relevant to the articles. If it was an article you created, please follow the instructions on Wikipedia:Why was my page deleted?, they might help us to understand what happened exactly and who deleted your page. You can also read our Notability guidelines (ie. the criteria to have an article) about websites. -- lucasbfr talk 06:57, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Cool, thanks, but it was a cumbersome way to get a response?! (again?!)Markmayhew 07:36, 26 December 2006 (UTC)User:MarkMayhew

I checked the deletion log and it seems that the article named "Nola.pbwiki.com" had been tagged as WP:CSD#A7 and WP:CSD#G11, meaning it had been tagged as advertising and as the subject of non-notable web content. Mark, what happened is that someone reviewed the article and determined that it met the criteria for speedy deletion. Articles are candidates for speedy deletion if they do not assert the notability of the subject. In other words, just being a real website isn't enough to justify an article. The website has to be "notable". But what is notable and what isn't? Wikipedia's guidelines for websites are located at WP:WEB. Any website-related article that does not assert notability along those lines is likely to be deleted. If you believe that nola.pbwiki.com does meet WP:WEB, you can contest the deletion at Deletion review. SWAdair | Talk 07:53, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
