The Apprentice: Martha Stewart Candidates

This page covers the candidates of The Apprentice: Martha Stewart

[edit] Candidate Background

For the first time in a The Apprentice series, The Candidates divided themselves into teams by personality type. The Creative personality team named themselves Matchstick while the Corporate personality team named themselves Primarius. However, in week five, because Matchstick lost four times in a row, Martha Stewart re-organized the teams.

The status of each of the candidates are denoted in parentheses.

[edit] Candidate Dismissal Letters

With the exception of Bethenny Frankel (who was dismissed in the Season Finale) and Dawna Stone (who was hired by Martha in the season finale), the following are transcripts of letters from Martha Stewart to dismissed candidates:

[edit] Week 1: Jeff

Dear Jeffrey,

I am sorry that you are the first to go, not to "fail" but rather, not to "fully succeed". You entered this serious endeavour knowing someone would have to leave after the first task. Unfortunately, it is you.

Personally, it is hard to make such a judgement call. But, that is part of the interview process.

Good luck, travel safely, it was great to meet you.

Cordially,

Martha Stewart

[edit] Week 2: Chuck

Dear Chuck,

This task was actually easier than the first, requiring delegation of duties, division of tasks, investment of assets, creativity, business sense, money, time, and effort.

In a business like Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, teams work in unison towards a common goal- success - the project can be simple or complex, but the Team makes it happen. There was no teamwork here and little leadership.

Most Cordially,

Martha Stewart

[edit] Week 3: Shawn

Dear Shawn,

Tonight, I know, was difficult for you. You have a career in television. You can develop your talent in that medium very well. You look good, you mean well, and you certainly are talkative.

The culture at MSLO is very complex. And I want to stress again that what we do here has to be thought through and through - "Beautiful from the inside out" - just like the wedding cake.

You, as you build career, will find this business lesson to be valid and true.

Best of Luck,

Martha Stewart

[edit] Week 4: Dawn

Dear Dawn,

I'm sorry that you must leave the team Matchstick but after 4 losses it is clear you are not making significant contributions to the group and really don't fit the idea of a real employee of MSLO.

It is hard to be energetic, visionary, hardworking and enthusiastic. I know you can be all of that, but not in this very intense environment. We want you to succeed and we certainly wish you well.

Good luck and a have a good trip home.

Sincerely,

Martha Stewart

[edit] Week 5: Jennifer

Dear Jennifer,

Thank you for being an "apprentice" candidate. I hope you found it an interesting diversion from your regular job.

We're sorry that it didn't work out. We wish you well,

Travel safely.

Cordially,

Martha Stewart

[edit] Week 6: David

Dear David,

Thank you for your effort and your good natured smile. I'm afraid that for this position you really need some more business experience and if and when you are seriously ready to talk Internet to my Internet Department we'd love to accommodate you.

I admire your entrepreneurial spirit and I know you will be successful.

Hope to see you again,

Martha Stewart

P.S. Safe Travel!

[edit] Week 7: Carrie and Sarah

[edit] Dear Carrie

It was a difficult decision to choose you over your teammates, but I think that both you and Sarah failed your team in leadership and also ideas.

I wish you well, and hope that you focus on a career that uses your other incredible talent.

Best Wishes,

Martha Stewart

[edit] Dear Sarah

I think, if you work on your leadership skills you can have a very successful career. You are young, appealing and attractive + smart.

I look forward to hearing about your next steps in the world of business.

Sincerely,

Martha Stewart

[edit] Week 8: Howie

Dear Howie,

I think that your obvious lack of what I termed "Passion" is partly a result of you understanding this interview process better and knowing that you were actually out of the game. I know that you are successful and if you do put the effort in, your own home-started business with your wife will burgeon and grow. You are proud of your customer base - continue to invent it and you will reap great rewards.

Best wishes, it was nice to see you here.

Martha Stewart

[edit] Week 9: Amanda

Dear Amanda,

You have certain talents that can be used in many ways. I do think that you should focus on those things that interest you - gardening, marketing, etc.

I hope you have as much passion for your garden as you expressed. It will bring you and your family much joy.

It was a pleasure knowing you.

Good luck,

Martha Stewart

[edit] Week 10: Leslie

Dear Leslie:

You almost made it to the last task. However, your skills could be put to better use in a marketing or consulting company, not MSLO.

Focus on what you do best and I have no doubt you will continue to be successful.

I wish you well—so does Charles, and we hope you travel safely.

Good luck,

Martha Stewart

P.S. Alexis sends her best also!

[edit] Week 11: Marcela and Ryan

[edit] Dear Marcela

I am sorry you are leaving. You have a lot to contribute. Your passion for food, for the Hispanic market in America and your hard work are qualities we admire at MSLO.

I think you have the makings for a really good food editor, food maker and even television performer.

I'd like to talk to you further in the future, once all of this has been completed.

Good Luck,

Martha Stewart.

[edit] Dear Ryan

You have passion, the desire to try new things, and a lot of self-confidence. I think you need more focus, possibly more education—business for example, and I know you will then be ready for a big challenge.

Good luck, you were an excellent candidate.

Best wishes,

Martha Stewart.

[edit] Week 12: Jim

Dear Jim:

I know you surprised yourself in this competition. I am proud that you went from a badly losing team to one of the final three. You certainly surprised many people, finally allowing your creativity to shine and your lack of focus to diminish. You succeeded where many thought you might fail and you should feel very good about your performance.

I meant what I said about advertising. I think you have very good talent in that area - not just for selling but creating. Good luck to you - my best wishes to your patient family. They will be happy to have you home. I hope to see you and hear from you in the future.
