Marzipan is a character in the Homestar Runner series of animated cartoons. The only real female in the series, she is Homestar Runner's "on again/off again" girlfriend. She resembles a bell, broom, or a baseball bat wearing a skirt.
Marzipan's personality is based on a number of stereotypes regarding a typical American liberal college student / activist type. She is a folk singer, pacifist, and vegetarian, and loves animals. Strong Bad likens her to "a dirty hippie - without the dirt". She, like Homestar, has no visible hands, but is still able to manipulate things in the world around her as if she had hands, for no adequately explored reason. It is hinted that she has invisible hands in the cartoon "Search for the Yello-Dello" when she slaps Homestar due to a misunderstanding and her handprint appears on his face. Her acoustic guitar "Carol" is a prized possession.
With her trusty guitar, and help from Homestar's stupidity, she had started the band 'Cool Tapes' and plays at "gardens... and stuff". Marzipan (Guitarist and Lead singer), The Cheat (Drummer), and Strong Mad (Bassist) have made one song, which was in the cartoon "Cool Things". Homestar had written 'Cool Tapes' on a wall, and then was ordered to get 3 cans of 'Yella' paint, and he also got some cool shades from Bubs's. While he was in the "death hole" (a very small hole) talking to who he thought was Dripping Yellow Madness (but was actually Strong Sad), Marzipan created the band, and one song that was unfinished until Homestar added the final line.
Homestar doesn't seem to really understand his relationship with her and, as a result, Marzipan is occasionally upset by Homestar's ineptitude. Over time, Marzipan has become more independent, and in one Halloween cartoon she became so annoyed with Homestar that she announced that she was breaking up with him (although it was apparently rescinded after Strong Bad was found to be at fault, as he was at the party dressed up as Homestar).
Marzipan's answering machine is a feature of the site where the other characters leave awkward or amusing messages. Often they involve Strong Bad posing as someone else as a prank, Homestar apologizing for his most recent blunder, and the occasional message from one of the other male characters who is desperate for female companionship (Coach Z, Bubs and Strong Mad; specifically). Strong Bad's pranks may be having an effect on Marzipan, as she has called herself to prank herself so she wouldn't feel bad when someone else did so. She also shows signs of depression, such as accusing herself of eating dirt.
Unlike most of the characters in the series, Marzipan is not voiced by Matt Chapman. She is instead voiced by Missy Palmer. In an interview [1], Palmer stated that Marzipan's personality has changed to match her own.
Marzipan was originally envisioned as the King of Town's daughter,[2] but this is no longer really upheld and is not part of the Homestar Runner canon.

[edit] Alternate versions
[edit] 1936
The Marzipan of the 1930s is largely the same as her modern counterpart, although probably not a vegetarian (given that the main point of the cartoons is that they're utterly destitute). Cosmetically, she sports pigtails instead of her current ponytail.
[edit] 20X6
Futuristic anime-style Marzipan is a radical departure from her current design, a fairly standard looking bishoujo type character, similar in appearance to Sailor Moon. When "Characters" is highlighted on Main Menu 17 of the site, Marzipan appears and leaps excitedly, then flashes a peace sign and proclaims "Yatta!" before disappearing again. It is reminiscent of Chun-Li's victory pose in the Street Fighter series.
[edit] Cardboard Marzipan
This version of Marzipan is simply a crudely drawn cardboard cut-out carried around by Homestar when the real Marzipan isn't around. As such, Homestar provides the voice for her, though the two often end up having wildly different opinions on matters (even leading to arguments). Homestar does not seem to be aware that he is providing the voice of Cardboard Marzie, as is indicated when "she" said that she thought fireworks promote violence, Homestar told her to shut up. "She" even flirts with other characters (such as Bubs and the Cheat, though not Coach Z) and expresses a desire to break up with Homestar, saying she needs to "find a new man."
Cardboard Marzipan has appeared in the cartoons "Happy Fireworks" and "No Hands on Deck".
