Maryland Transit Administration Police

Police employed by the Maryland Transit Administration to patrol public transportation and related facilities in and around the Baltimore Maryland area. Officers are certified by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions and have full police powers.
The current chief of police is Colonel Douglas Deleaver appointed in July 2000. Deputy chief is Lieutenant Colonel John Gavrilis. Lieutenant Colonel Richard Wheeler is commander of special operations. Bureau commanders are Captain Fred Damron JR Southern District, Captain David Marzola Northern District, Captain Jacob Bauer Administrative Bureau and Captain William Collins Investigations. Chief Deleaver is also National Vice President of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.

The department was founded on October 1, 1971 by act of the Maryland State Legislature as the Mass Transit Administration Police Force. On October 1, 2001 when the Mass Transit Administration was renamed the Maryland Transit Administration, the police force changed it's name to reflect the change as well.
[edit] Fleet
The primary patrol vehicle of the department is the Chevrolet Impala. Ford Crown Victorias and Chevrolet Luminas are also used. The prisoner transport vehicle is a Dodge van. Harley Davidson motorcycles are currently used. Current markings are all black vehicles with yellow lettering stating transit police. Towards the front of the vehicle is the department's uniform patch and at the rear is the Maryland Transit Administration logo. Light bars are from Federal Signal and are red and blue rotating lights though some vehicles have strobe lights incorporated into the design.

Officers are each issued a Sigarms SIG Pro 2340 .40 caliber pistol, OC spray and the ASP baton.
