[edit] Route description

From the north, MD 85 begins at Interstate 70 in Frederick. It is two-lane undivided highway for most of its run, widening to four lanes briefly as it traverses Frederick's southern retail district. Called Buckeystown Pike, MD 85 runs through the heart of the small town of Buckeystown.

After leaving Frederick, MD 85 is a rural route for the remainder of its length. The route terminates in an intersection with MD 28.

[edit] History

Maryland Route 85 runs along the former original routing of U.S. 15 before that designation was rerouted along part of limited-access US 15-340.

[edit] Notes

  • The northern terminus of Maryland Route 85 previously occurred at its junction with Maryland Route 355. It was extended beyond that point in 2005 and now terminates at an entrance ramp to eastbound Interstate 70. At this point MD 85 changes direction, briefly running due east-west, though it is not signed as such. The ramp juts from a stub which appears to be the site of a future overpass over I-70.
