Maryland Route 7 is the former alignment of U.S. Route 40 from Baltimore to the state line with Delaware. The route was part of US 40 until Pulaski Highway was built and became the new U.S. 40 in 1935. As a result of it being the older alignment of a newer route, MD 7 crosses back and forth across U.S. 40, and exists in separate sections. The majority of the route is named Philadelphia Road.

[edit] Route description

MD 7 exists in several segments, five of which are known to be signed as MD 7. Each segment is listed by county with a separate junction list.

[edit] Baltimore-Harford

Three segments of MD 7 exist in Baltimore County; the first segment runs into Harford County and is the longest of the group, at 22.83 miles. It runs from U.S. 40 at the Baltimore City line to U.S. 40 in Aberdeen. The second segment, designated MD 7BA, is a short connector that links MD 7 to US 40 at the Baltimore city line, while the third segment, designated MD 7J, serves as a short connector within MD 7's interchange with MD 43.

  • Segment B: 3.56 miles. Runs south of U.S. 40. It starts in Perryville as Broad Street, on the east side of the Susquehanna River, near a railroad bridge. The route terminates at U.S. 40 near Principio Furnace. One end of segment B is 1 mile from one end of segment C.
  • Segment C: 9.73 miles. Runs south of U.S. 40 via Charlestown and North East and terminates at U.S. 40 near Elkton.
  • Segment D: 2.55 miles. Runs north of U.S. 40 through Elkton. This segment ends 2 miles before the Delaware border.

[edit] Notes

  • All segments of MD 7 are signed with the standard Maryland highway trailblazer. The letters are used to differentiate the unconnected segments from one another; the mainline segment has no letter due to its length.
  • Segment D ends two miles from the Delaware border; Maryland Route 281 is a leftover alignment of U.S. 40 that continues as Old Baltimore Pike in Delaware.
