Maryland Route 45

Maryland Route 45, the majority of which is known locally as York Road with a section several miles long known as Greenmount Avenue, is a main road from U.S. Route 1 (North Avenue) in Baltimore, Maryland, north to the Pennsylvania state line, where it continues to York, Pennsylvania. Until a bypass (now I-83) was built in the 1950s, it was the path of US 111; the road now serves mostly local traffic. However, south of the Baltimore Beltway (I-695), MD 45 was US 111 until 1963, when US 111 was decommissioned.
The change in name from York Road to Greenmount Avenue, which occurs near the intersection with East 41st St., marks the location where the Baltimore city line lay from 1888 to 1917. The city limits were pushed northward after 1917, but the portion of the road annexed by Baltimore City at that time was not renamed.
MD 45 passes through the Baltimore suburbs of Towson, Lutherville-Timonium and Cockeysville. Within the Baltimore city limits, the historic Senator Theatre is on the road. In Towson, MD 45 passes through the Towson Circle, the first modern roundabout in Maryland.

Maryland Route 45 is one of the most well-known routes in the Baltimore area, as it serves a heavily populated part of the city, and it passes through many well-developed suburbs, and near numerous residential, commercial, and industrial areas. Many apartment complexes and shopping centers are located near the route.

[edit] Public Transportation
Maryland Route 45 has more public transportation than any other corridor in the Baltimore area, provided by buses and the Central Light Rail line.
Throughout the city, and in Baltimore County as far north as Ridgely Road, bus service is provided by the No. 8 Line. This line operates every 10 minutes at most times, and is one of the Maryland Transit Administration's most heavily used bus routes.
In the area north of Ridgely Road, service is provided by the No. 9 Line. However, due to development in areas off the main road, the no. 9 line has been modified over the years to operate mostly on other streets. The only portions of York Road currently served by the no. 9 line are from Ridgely to Timonium Road, and from Padonia to Cranbrook Road.
The nos. 8 and 9 lines at one time provided service between Shawan Road and Sparks. This service was abolished in 2005.
There are also numerous light rail stops located within a close walk of York Road from Ridgely Road northward.

Maryland Route 45 Bypass is a short bypass around the west side of downtown Towson. It is routed along Bosley Avenue and is signed by Baltimore County. Some of the signs along the route are white-on-green instead of the standard black-on-white as shown.
