[edit] Route description

MD 140 is known by various names depending on location; south of Reisterstown it is known as Reisterstown Road. North of Reisterstown, between there and Westminster it is known as Westminster Pike. Northwest of Westminster it is known as Taneytown Pike.

The route begins as an undivided suburban arterial, starting at U.S. Route 1 in downtown Baltimore. After intersecting the eastern terminus of MD 26 it runs northwest out of Baltimore into Reisterstown. Paralleled by Interstate 795, it junctions MD 30 in historic Reisterstown and then turns west, meeting the northern terminus of I-795 and upgrading into a four-lane undivided highway. After intersecting MD 91 in Finksburg it divides into the Westminster Bypass, a four-lane divided expressway replacing the original two-lane rural road. The expressway runs northwest through Westminster, where MD 97 joins it. The two routes run together through Westminster as a heavily congested six-lane arterial; the route was originally constructed as a bypass of the heavily congested Main Street (now unsigned MD 32 for most of its length); the lack of access controls has resulted in overdevelopment.

After junctioning MD 27 the two routes split northwest of the central business district; MD 140 continues on to intersect the northern terminus of both MD 31 and MD 32. Finally, it continues northwest all the way to Taneytown and Emmitsburg before ending at the state line, where it becomes Pennsylvania Route 16.

Between Reisterstown and the Baltimore Beltway, Route 140 is paralleled by Interstate 795.

[edit] History

Until 1979, MD Route 140 was U.S. Route 140. Before U.S. Route 140 was decommissioned, it was where MD 140 is today. At the the divergence of MD 140 and MD 97 northwest of Westminster, the two routes were swapped after the decommissioning of the U.S. route; MD 97 now follows US 140's old route to Pennsylvania, while MD 140 follows MD 97's original route to Taneytown and US 15. As a result, MD 140 follows the bypass of the original MD 32 between Westminster and Taneytown that was first designated as part of MD 97.

[edit] Public transportation

In Baltimore City and County, there is plenty of public transportation available on Reisterstown Road and Pennsylvania Avenue opererated by the Maryland Transit Administration.

Along Pennsylvania Avenue in Baltimore, service is provided by Route 7. This line operates between Mondawmin and Canton. It also passes the Penn-North and Upton Metro Subway Stations, located on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Between Mondawmin and Old Court Road, service is provided by Route M-2. This line operates every 10-33 minutes, and it overlaps with Route M-9 between Patterson Avenue and Old Court.

From Patterson Avenue to the end of Reisterstown Road in Glyndon, Maryland, service is provided by the Route M-9, which has a deviation to the Owings Mills Metro Subway Station and Town Center along Painters Mill Road. Route M-9 ultimately loops along Maryland Route 30, also known as Hanover Pike. Service on this line is provided every 20-45 minutes at most times.

The route of the Baltimore Metro Subway also operates near Reisterstown Road, with seven stations located directly on or within less than a mile of the route. In addition, several other bus lines either operate on small segments of or streets that cross Reisterstown Road.
