[edit] Fall 1999 - Spring 2000
In the Fall of 1999, Emmie Helms, a junior at the University of Maryland, began rowing at Thompson's Boat House on Georgetown's Potomac River waterfront. In her same novice group were several other women from the University of Maryland. When their introductory course at Thompson's finished, they decided to organize a rowing club at the University. The initial paperwork was submitted to the Office of Campus Programs and the Student Government Association in September of 1999.
Frank Benson was the first coach of the 12-person team, which was co-ed at the time. His connections with Georgetown University coach Tony Johnson enabled the Maryland squad to initially practice with GU's ergs and equipment.
Through a kind donation from Joseph Creed of Catholic University, Maryland crew received its first 8-person boat and a set of oars. The team's first water practice took place on November 26, 1999. As they were new to the sport and relatively inexperienced, no races were entered that semester.
In Spring of 2000, the team moved from its home at Thompson's to Capital Rowing Club, with the help of Jim Connolly, and oficer of Capital and colleague of Coach Benson. With the support of their new location, the team was able to compete in its first races: the Capital Classic and the Mid-Atlantics on the Occquan River.
At the end of this semester, Frank Benson left the team to become the assistant coach at Georgetown University. At the same time, the team moved to its current home in Bladensburg, Maryland.
[edit] Spring 2000 - Spring 2002
Through the next few sememsters, the team grew modestly and eventually split into separate mens team and a womens teams. Dr. Doug Lewis, a former professor in the UM Honors Program, soon after took the reins as the Maryland Men's Crew (MMC) faulty advisor and helped the team become officially recognized as a sports club on campus in the fall of 2000. Dr. Lewis was instrumental in finding funding and forming what the men's team is today. Dr. Lewis rowed for the University of Cambridge from ??? to ???. Dr. Lewis was the MMC faulty advisor from 2001 to 2004 when he retired from the university.
