Mary Overlie

Mary Overlie has had a long career as a performer, choreographer, teacher and theater collaborator, working extensively in both the United States and Europe. She has worked with Paul Langland, and Nina Martin as well as Wendell Beavers who formed her core company from 1976 to 1980. She has collaborated with theatre directors Lawrence Sachrow, Lee Breuer, JoAnne Akailitis, Brian Jucha and Anne Bogart. Some of these collaborations have won Obies, one of New York's prestigious off-broadway theatre awards.
Ms. Overlie is a founder of: Danspace at St. Mark's Church, a dance presenting organization and theatre in New York; Movement Research, a dance co-operative now in its twenty fifth year of operation, sponsoring workshops and presenting performances serving the community of New York City dancers; The Experimental Theatre Wing, a studio in Tisch School of the Arts' undergraduate drama department; The Pro Series, experimental dance workshops designed for the Tanz Wochen the summer dance festival of Vienna.
She is currently teaching at the Experimental Theatre Wing, working on a book for The Six Viewpoints, designing a certificate program for The Six Viewpoints, and performing occasionally.

[edit] 2001 ARREST
Known for her political activism, Ms. Overlie was arrested by New York City Police shortly after the 9/11 attacks when she was discovered in the act of spray-painting the words "Capitalist Pigs" on the rubble of the World Trade Center.

1985 - 1987---Paris--Experimental Theater Wing , NYU. Paris ETW was developed as a one year option for ETW students. The location made it possible for ETW to have access to European theater tech in the context of American avant garde theater studies.

2004 - 1978---Six Viewpoints--developed a conceptual articulation for postmodern performance and a teaching system that is applicable to directing, choreographing, dancing, acting, improvisation, and analysis. The Six Viewpoints has been adopted as a basis for the core curriculum at ETW at NYU. In January, 1998, there was a national conference on the Viewpoints held in New York, sponsored by NYU, Pace University and Stage Directors and Choreographer Foundation. The theory of this work was finally completed in 2003.
1994--Postmodern Dance School--A cross-technical design for a four year dance education and two year teacher training program commissioned by the International Tanz Wochen Wien and the Austrian Government. Never implemented.
