Mary King, born 1961 June 8 in Sidmouth, Devon, is a world class equestrian sportswoman. Growing up in a family that was not involved in horses, Mary King worked in a butcher's shop, as a gardener, and as a cook to help fund her riding career. She was inspired by a visit to the Badminton Horse Trials to begin eventing, and later went to work for Sheila Willcox, a former European Champion. She went to her first Badminton in 1985, finishing in seventh place, and finally won the event in 1992 with her horse, King William. She later won the event again in 2000 with Star Appeal.
Mary King suffered a terrible fall in 2001, breaking her neck. Luckily, she recovered fully and was able to attend the 2002 World Championships as part of the British Team.
Mary King has won four team gold medals at World Equestrian Games and European Championships. She has been British Champion four times, more than anyone to date. King has also represented Britain in four Olympic Games: 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004.
Mary King now lives with her husband and two children, Emily and David, near Sidmouth, Devon.
