Mary Jarred

Mary Jarred, born 9 October 1899, Brotton, Yorkshire, was a British mezzo-soprano of the mid twentieth century.
She made her professional debut in 1929, and pursued a career in both the concert hall and the opera house. Her Covent Garden debut was as Erda in 1934.
Among her recordings were The Bartered Bride (conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham), The Flying Dutchman (conducted by Fritz Reiner), Beethoven Symphony No 9 (Arturo Toscanini) and Missa Solemnis (Beecham).
On 5 October 1938 she was one of the original 16 singers in Vaughan Williams’s Serenade to Music.
Mary Jarred died on 12 December 1993.
