Martin Vahl

Martin Vahl (October 10, 1749 - December 24, 1804) was a Norwegian botanist.
He was born in Bergen, and studied botany at Copenhagen and in Uppsala under Carolus Linnaeus. He edited Flora Danica, and lectured at the University of Copenhagen Botanical Garden from 1779 to 1782.
Vahl made a research tour of Europe and North Africa between 1783 and 1785. He became professor at the Society for Natural History ("Naturhistorie Selskabet") in Copenhagen in 1786 and was a full professor at the University of Copenhagen between 1801 and 1804.
The standard botanical author abbreviation Vahl is applied to species he described.
