Martin Snape

Martin Snape was a prolific and accomplished artist, exhibiting at the Royal Academy between 1874 and 1901. He concentrated mainly on topographical scenes from the Meon Valley and his home town of Gosport. He was born there in 1852 and was associated with the area all his life, designing the new borough seal in 1922-the local football club, Gosport Borough, still use the original design on their shirts. In 1923 he was chosen to give the speech of welcome to the 91st Annual conference of the British Medical Assosiation which was being held in Portsmouth. He died in 1930 but his most famous painting, Forton Creek,one of a series, still hangs in the town hall.
