[edit] History
MLK Magnet opened its doors in August of 1986 at the former Pearl High School with only grades 7-9, adding one grade per year until 1990 when it had its first graduating class of 24 students. It was originally named Martin Luther King, Jr., Magnet High School for the Health Sciences and Engineering; however, its moniker changed in 2001 to its current name.
[edit] Academics
On May 8, 2006, Newsweek ranked MLK Magnet as the top public high school in Tennessee and 39th among public high schools nationally. MLK Magnet is known for its academic program, focusing on math and science, and has one of the finest band and orchestra programs in Tennessee. The school also boasts the reigning state Quiz Bowl champions.
[edit] Sports
Despite MLK's reputation for academics, that is not the only thing for which MLK is known. MLK has also won some TSSAA championships[1]. MLK has won 2 state championships in boy's basketball (the first in 1991 and the other in 1996), a state championship in boy's track in 2005, and a state runner-up in boy's track in 2004.
