[edit] Biography
[edit] Early years
Born Martha Elenor Erwin in York, Pennsylvania, she grew up in Texas. Encouraged by her parents, she began playing violin at age five. She starting playing in the fiddle style at age 12, and was in the school orchestra. From around 1983 on, Martie (as she is known) toured along with her sister Emily Erwin in the teenage bluegrass group Blue Night Express. She attended Greenhill School in Addison, Texas. In 1989 Martie took third place at the National Fiddle Championships.

She and Emily were then part of the formation of the Dixie Chicks in 1989. Originally billed as Martie Erwin, she plays fiddle, mandolin, viola and sings background vocals in the group.
In their McDonald's commercial for McRibs, Martie was a vegetarian at the time and spat out bites of the sandwich between takes.
Martie wrote the song Cowboy Take Me Away on the Dixie Chicks fifth album Fly for her sister[1] Emily Robison. Martie was was so happy that Emily found love (Emily married Charlie Robison in May 99) and wrote the song, which was their wedding waltz.
[edit] Personal life
Martie married pharmaceutical representative Ted Seidel on June 17, 1995, after which she was billed as Martie Seidel. During the marriage she had a step-son, Carter. The couple was divorced in November 1999.
Martie married Gareth Maguire, a Roman Catholic from Northern Ireland on August 10, 2001, in a civil ceremony in Hawaii, before a Catholic "blessing" ceremony was held in the groom's hometown in County Antrim. Martie said that the Catholic Church would not permit a wedding service due to her prior divorce. She also said that some of her husband's Catholic friends had referred to her as a "heathen". It is not clear whether she agreed to raise their children as Catholics. From this point on she was billed as Martie Maguire. During promotion of the album Home, the Dixie Chicks made frequent reference to the fact that "White Trash Wedding" was written about Martie and Gareth's nuptials.
Martie and Gareth have two children, twin daughters Eva Ruth and Kathleen Emilie, born April 27, 2004. They reside in Austin, Texas.
