Martha Kostyra (mother)

Harriet Martha Kostyra (b. September 16, 1914, in Buffalo, New York) is the mother of American business magnate, author, editor, and homemaking advocate Martha Stewart and has occasionally appeared demonstrating recipes on various incarnations of Stewart's television programs. The daughter of Polish immigrants, she was married to Stewart's father, Edward, from September of 1937 until his death in August of 1979. Their first child, Eric, was born in 1938 and their next child, Ms. Stewart, was born in August of 1941.

Kostyra was a school teacher at Lincoln School in Nutley, New Jersey, the city where she and her husband raised Stewart and Stewart's five siblings, until her retirement in 1981.
