Marston mats
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Marston mats (aka Marsden Matting) were used during World War II by United States Seabees and other front line construction personnel to build runways and other readily usable surfaces over all kinds of terrain. Also known as perforated steel planking or PSP, they consisted of steel strips with holes punched in them that could be connected to each other and then covered with coral or soil to form a level surface. A runway several hundred feet wide and 5000 feet (1500 m) long could be created within a week by a team of dedicated workers.
