Marshall uses the fictitious Redhawk as its mascot. The former mascot was the Redskin, but it was changed due to respect for the Anishinaabek Native Americans and their spiritual beliefs. After a couple of years without a mascot, and despite the majority of the community still wanting Redskins as the mascot, the student body voted in the Spring of 2005 in favor of changing the mascot to the Redhawk. The Redskin/Redhawk debate remains controversial to this day. Many students still wear the Redskin's logo on clothing as well.
Marshall now competes in the Southwest Michigan Athletic Conference East (SMAC East).
