Marley Station

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marley Station is a shopping mall located in Glen Burnie, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, off of Maryland Route 100 and Governor Ritchie Highway (also known as Maryland Route 2). It opened in February 1987, and has experienced competition from the nearby Arundel Mills mall, which opened in late 2000; both malls are owned by the Mills Corporation.

Due to the buyout of May Department Stores by Federated Department Stores, Marley Station's Hecht's store was converted to a Macy's store in early May 2006, and the anchor location formerly occupied by Macy's was converted into a Boscov's on October 27, 2006.

Marley Station's anchor stores include Macy's, Boscov's, JCPenney, Sears and Regal Cinemas. Some of the mall's other major retailers include Bath & Body Works, Forever 21, Limited Too, Victoria's Secret, Yankee Candle Company, Hollister Co., and F.Y.E. (for your entertainment).

[edit] Allegations of discrimination

On June 16, 2006, four Glen Burnie teens entered Marley Station. One of the four was dressed in a gothic style. Three security guards approached the teens and told them to leave. The teens claimed that the guards were implying, by certain words and actions, that they were being told to leave solely on the one teen's style, an event which, according to the teens, had occurred before.

A week later, on June 23, the four teens launched a protest against Marley Station, picketing with anti-profiling signs and flyers across the street, while also displaying information on the incident on Myspace. Their protest caught the attention of The Maryland Gazette and WBAL 11, which both reported on the incident at length.[citation needed]
