Market Square Heroes is the first released single of progressive rock band Marillion. Market Square heroes was released in 1982 with "Three Boats Down From The Candy" as B-side. The 12" had an additional track; the 17.15 min. long "Grendel" (a few minutes short of the 20.05 min version recorded as a demo with Fair Deal Studios in 1982). Grendel, it is rumored, is a song the band nowadays refuses to play[citation needed]. There are two versions of Market Square Heroes. The original version is what is featured on this, their debut single, which has the lyrics, "I am your anti-Christ, show me allegiance." There is another version of Market Square Heroes that is featured on the B-side of the Punch and Judy 12" single which was a completely re-done version of the song. Most notable is the anti-crescendo, yet climactic drum work that was cut from the opening 10 seconds of the song. The second thing to note is the change in lyrics. The refrain, "I am your anti-Christ, show me allegiance." is now "I am your Battle Priest, show me allegiance." A less offensive, less troubling approach to the message of the song. Market Square Heroes also appears on Marillion's "Real to Reel" album (1984). The song is launched by the frenetic keyboard musicianship of Mark Kelly and has an extended bridge in the song where each band member takes a solo. Market Square Heroes was also produced as a 12 inch, full-color Picture Disk limited to a production of 2500 for The Web's fan club members.
