Mark Streit (born December 11, 1977 in Englisberg, Switzerland) is a Swiss professional ice hockey player, and captain of Swiss National Hockey Team. He plays defence for the Montreal Canadiens, and until recently was the only skater in the NHL from Switzerland. The other two are goalies, Martin Gerber and David Aebischer. On March 16th 2006, the three Swiss players were playing on the same ice for the first time ever, as the Carolina Hurricanes visited the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre. Patrick Fischer has since rejoined the trio in the NHL playing with the Phoenix Coyotes in his first NHL season.

2006/07 Season

Canadiens' coach, Guy Carbonneau found himself with a problem in November, when he had 8 defensemen at his disposal, following the return of Francis Bouillon from injury and the arrival of Janne Niinimaa. In order to effectively use all his players, Carbonneau moved Streit into a forward position. The experiment has been somewhat effective, as Streit started on the fourth line providing solid two-way play, but moved his way up the lineup by scoring pivotal goals for the Canadiens. In addition to his forward roles, Streit also plays on the point during powerplay situations.

The experiment cumulated in March 2007 when Carbonneau did a bold move and moved Streit to the first forward line alongside longtime team captain Saku Koivu and top goal-scorer Michael Ryder. Streit exceeded all expectations and was nominated recipient of the Jacques Beauchamp Trophy, given annually to the member of the Montreal Canadiens who played a dominant role during the regular season without obtaining any particular honor. In addition, Streit was nominated as the Canadiens' nominee for Bill Masterton Trophy by the Montreal chapter of the Professional Hockey Writer's Association.
