The son of Evergreen International Aviation founder Del Smith, Mark raced in Indy Lights from 1990 to 1992, finishing 3rd in series points his rookie year and 2nd in 1991, capturing 3 wins along the way. He then moved up to the CART series and finished 22nd in series points in 1993 for Arciero Racing and 19th in 1994 for Walker Racing. His best CART finish was 5th place in the 1994 Michigan 500.
