Mark McGowan (Born July 13, 1967), son of Dennis and Mary McGowan, is an Australian politician, who is currently Minister for Education and Training; South West in the State of Western Australia.

[edit] Early life

Mark McGowan was born on 13 July 1967. Mark is the son of Dennis and Mary McGowan of Coffs Harbour New South Wales (NSW). Whilst he was growing up Mark worked in a variety of jobs including a pizza chef, furniture removalist, farm labourer and tutor.

Mark completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1987 and Bachelor of Laws in 1989. In 1990 Mark obtained a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice.

Mark joined the Navy in 1989, served in a number of locations and undertook a number of deployments on East and West Coast based ships.

As a Navy Legal Officer, Mark served at HMAS STIRLING in Rockingham for a number of years.

His duties included assisting Naval personnel and their families with their legal problems and often involved representing Navy personnel in the Courts.

He is now a Lieutenant in the Navy Reserves.

In 1994 Mark was elected a Councillor to the City of Rockingham. In 1995 Mark was elected Deputy Mayor of the City of Rockingham.

During his time on Council he participated in a range of committees and was the Chairperson of efforts to gain dive wrecks for the Rockingham community.


[edit] Career in government

Mark first joined the Australian Labor Party in 1984 and was pre-selected as the Labor candidate for Rockingham in April 1996.

On December 14, 1996, he was elected State Member for Rockingham.

In January 1997, he was appointed Labor Spokesperson for Local Government and Deputy Whip for the Opposition in March 1997.

In March 1997 Mark was awarded the Governor General’s Commendation for Bravery, for actions he took as a Naval Officer in 1995.

By August 1999 Mark had added Tourism, Heritage and Sport and Recreation to his shadow portfolio responsibilities.

Mark was re-elected as the Member for Rockingham in 2001 with an increased majority and in March 2001 he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier.

In 2005 following the re-election of the Gallop Government, Mark was appointed Minister for Tourism, the South West, Peel, Youth and Racing and Gaming. He also held the portfolios of Sport and Recreation, Seniors, Disability Services and Multicultural Interests.

In 2006, he was appointed Minister for the Environment and retained the Racing and Gaming porfolio in the first Carpenter Ministry.

In December 2006 Mark was promoted to Minister for Education and Training; South West. Mark is a patron or member of various sporting and social clubs in the Rockingham area.

Mark lives in Rockingham with his wife Sarah and two sons Samuel and Alexander.

The electorate of Rockingham is located in the South Metropolitan Region and includes the suburbs of Garden Island, Point Peron, Rockingham, Safety Bay, Shoalwater and parts of Cooloongup, East Rockingham and Waikiki.

Enrolment (December 31, 2006) 25,160; 48 sq kms.
