Mark Chang, the Prince of Yugopotamia, (which could possibly be a reference to Mesopotamia or Yugoslavia) is a fictional character in the Nickelodeon animated television series The Fairly OddParents. His name might be a spoof of Marcus Chong.

[edit] Biography

He is in love with Vicky, Timmy's evil baby-sitter, until he realizes that Vicky hugs him, which on Yugopotamia is one of the feared things along with chocolate, cute teddy bears, Earth-like affection, and things that are soft and fluffy. He is attracted to how evil she is because on his planet being gross, rude, and evil is a positive thing and being nice and sweet is a negative thing. Mark speaks in a strange surfer-dude accent with emphasis often oddly placed on the wrong syllables. Later in the series he joins Timmy's school in the disguised form of a human boy, to hide out from his homicidal fiancee, Mandie ("Man-DIE"), whom he left because she was "hideous" (she was actually incredibly attractive). It is stated that at the end of the episode "Totally Spaced Out", where Timmy wishes Vicky to be a million million miles away from him, offers a " Whack a Weasel" game to Mark so as to pass the time till he can get Vicky back that Happy Peppy Betty and Gary offer Mark healthy food, which causes him pain (in an episode where Timmy wishes the world to be just desserts Mark is seen enjoying healthy food, since thanks to the wish, healthy food is the new "bad food"). He also appears in the April 2005 episode "Five Days of F.L.A.R.G.", where he reveals that Yugopotamians have an alien medical condition, which, if a Yugopotamian does not celebrate F.L.A.R.G., his appendix bursts, resulting in " A planetary destroying force which could destroy the planet".( this is the sole reason Timmy helps Mark celebrate Flarg, as each day was misery to him.) However, one downside is that the final celebration of F.L.A.R.G. requires that the host planet be destroyed, thus explaining an inquiry by Timmy as to why F.L.A.R.G. is not celebrated on Yugopotamia. F.L.A.R.G. stand for "Fart," "Lie," "Amnesia," "Ranksgiving," and "Good-bye," which means that they will destroy the planet they celebrated on. He is voiced by Rob Paulsen.

Mark's parents are King Grippulon and Queen Jipjuriulac of Yugopotamia, known on Earth as Mr. and Mrs. Chang. They were introduced in Spaced Out!, and later appeared in Totally Spaced Out! and the Halloween special Scary GodParents, and then in So Totally Spaced Out!. They love Mark (depending on what type of love Yugopotamia considers), and they hate cuteness and niceness (like pillows, teddy bears, especially the "dreaded" chocolate, and other things humans think is nice).

Mark Chang apparently has clones, as in the Halloween special when the Pumpkinator destroys his ship with him on it, his father says, "Unfreeze one of his clones!"

His last name, Chang, started out as an alias in his first appearance, but has apparently been changed to be his actual last name.

Mark comes from Yugopotamia, a large planet far away from Earth. It is supposedly "the most feared planet". The name itself seems to be a portmanteau of Yugoslavia and Mesopotamia.

The planet is basically the exact opposite of Earth. For example, chocolate is disgusting, vegetables are the favored desserts, fun is painful, Vicky is highly admired, etc. Manure is the rarest delicacy on Yugopotamia. Which is somewhat contradictory to events from a later episode, where it is shown that every Yugopotamian on screen is "toasting" manure. After the first appearance of Mark, Yugopotamia, and the race of Yugopotamians, and Timmy's first interaction with them, it is a running gag that Timmy is considered by the general populace of Yugopotamia to be one of the most dangerous, ferocious warriors in existence, because, since most everything on Yugopotamia is opposite to that of Earth, Timmy was, of course, able to withstand their most feared torments with ease--i.e., walking over a bed of pretty flowers (they were astonished that he "neither burns nor bleeds,") hugging a teddy bear (he should have burst into flames), and eating the most toxic, poisonous substance known to Yugopotamians (chocolate.) In fact, they have at times called upon Timmy to save their civilization from outside threats. (To a lesser extent, there is evidence that Yugopotamians suspect that most of the rest of the humans of Earth are warriors nearly as fearsome as Timmy, a claim Timmy himself has made on occasion to intimidate them for the purpose of discouraging Yugopotamian attacks upon Earth; this belief was probably reinforced by Vicky's 'admirable' ability to administer cruelty and evil, and sharing Timmy's ability to withstand terrible poisons and torments such as chocolate.)

The episode Totally Spaced Out reveals that Yugopotamia is exactly one trillion miles, or approximately one-sixth of a light year away from Earth. Timmy had wished to send Vicky "one-million-million" miles away and Cosmo measured out the distance exactly, ending up next to a balcony on the Yugopotamian royal residence. In reality, were he to measure the distance exactly, he would instead measure nearly exactly vertically down to the ground. Given his limited intelligence, it is possibly that Cosmo didn't count correctly.

Also, in Scary Godparents, Mark's father (the king) indicates that 9,000 Yugopotamian days pass in about two Earth seconds. This may account for the many globular protrusions extending from the planet's surface, as seen from space. However, the planet does not appear to be rotating much, if at all, when shown. It may be that the Yugopotamian day was defined during an earlier period when it was spinning much more quickly. Of course, being a cartoon, this particular issue does not need to have any real explanation.

Another Yugopatamian measure is revealed in Scary Godparents. Mark reveals that 5,000 Yugopatamian miles is about 2 Earth inches. The only explanation for this is that they use a different system of measuring things, possibly helping them measure to a fine point.

The holiday F.L.A.R.G. is celebrated once a year, but always on another planet which gets blown up on the fifth day (this may be why the Yugopotamians are always conquering other planets).

Based on their behaviors of joy and pain, Yugopotamians seem to worship masochism. This even goes so far to believe that they are immortal, as no elderly Yugopotamians have ever been shown.
