[edit] High School Years
Carrier went to Long Beach Polytechnic High School, and was a lettermnan in football. In football, he was a 3-year varsity starter. Mark was named to the Parade All-American, USA Today All-American, and the Press-Telegrams Best-in-the-West teams in 1985.

He is a 1989 graduate of the University of Southern California. As just a junior in 1989, Mark was named to The Playboy All-American team and became USC's first and only winner of the Jim Thorpe Award, presented annually to the nations's best defensive back. A 2-time consensus first team All-American, Carrier had 7 interceptions in 1989, plus 107 tackles, 3 fumble recoveries and 10 pass deflections. A 3-year starter for the Trojans, Carrier finished his collegiate career with 13 interceptions. Mark was inducted into the USC Athletic Hall of Fame, class of 2006.

He was selected with the 6th pick of the 1990 NFL draft by the Chicago Bears. Mark lined up at free safety and won Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1990, after he led the NFL with a rookie record 10 interceptions. Mark played for the Chicago Bears (1990-96), the Detroit Lions (1997-99) and Washington Redskins until 2000. Mark was known as a smart player, often playing "quarterback on defense". He played in 3 Pro Bowls in 1990, 1991 and 1993, and was a Pro-Bowl alternate from 1997-2000.

In 2006 the Baltimore Ravens hired Mark Carrier as their secondary coach. He was the defensive backs coach at Arizona State University the previous two years.
