Mark Burgess (musician)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mark Burgess, a vocalist, bass player and songwriter, is the lead singer and main force behind English post-punk band The Chameleons since its founding in 1981. The band was formed with guitarists Dave Fielding and Reg Smithies and drummer John Lever.

Soon after the first breakup, Burgess reunited with John Lever to form The Sun & the Moon, with guitarist Andy Clegg (who had played keyboards with the Chameleons) and second guitarist Andy Whitaker. Most of his solo work has been recorded with the different members of this band (including Neil Thin, Yves Altana, and Karen Leatham).

"Mark Burgess creates music which sends a tingle down your spine, scaling emotional heights which most bands could only dream of. At times frightening, at times inspirational..."

Burgess is the singer of the band The Chameleons the whole time it has existed.

"In 1999, Mark formed 'Invincible' with Yves Altana of Wonky Alice fame and recorded the album "Venus" in a gas cooling tower somewhere in Manchester with drummer Geoff Walker. Venus is a supurbly crafted work of art, touching all who listen, captivating their inner sensibilities and always leaving them wanting more of the same. The group toured the UK in early 2000 with Phil Cuthbert playing bass and keyboards. Phil left the group to pursue a solo career after the tour at which point Mark started playing bass, and Danny Ashberry was recruited to take over the keyboard / backing vocal role. After a couple of gigs, Geoff found the pressure of stardom a litttle overwhelming, and was replaced by Craig Barry on drums. The band then embarked on a successful UK tour pleasing crowds across the country. The various members then disembarked across Europe to live, and, although keeping their friendship intact, Mark and Yves splintered to form the band 'Bird', initially with Craig on drums (suporting New Model Army on their UK tour), but in 2006, enlisting Achim Farber on drums in a slimmed down 3 piece outfit playing a selection of Invinvible and Chameleons songs interwoven with a selection of memorable and very competent new songs which wowed the crowds on their 2006 European tour.
