Maris Martinsons

Maris Martinsons is a professor of management at the City University of Hong Kong and research director of the Pacific Rim Institute for the Studies of Management. He was the first double winner of a university-wide teaching excellence award in Hong Kong.

Maris received his B.A.Sc. (Engineering Science) and M.B.A. degrees from the University of Toronto, and a Ph.D. in Industrial and Business Studies from the University of Warwick.

Martinsons is a leading authority on strategic management and organizational change and a pioneer with both action research and e-learning. He has been published in many leading English-language journals and translated into languages such as Chinese, French, Japanese, Latvian, and Russian.

He has experience as a business consultant, mostly in association with Ernst & Young, McKinsey & Co. and DRI/McGraw-Hill. He has successfully completed more than 30 projects in Western, Chinese and cross-cultural settings, and served as an external advisor to leading organizations and institutions around the world, including the governments of Hong Kong and Latvia.

Martinsons has planned, designed and helped to implement organizational changes that have improved the performance of clients ranging from energy suppliers and financial service providers to property developers and public agencies. He has also conducted strategic reviews of systems for managing people and information and worked with top management teams to introduce strategic management systems, including balanced scorecards, and business intelligence systems. Martinsons has completed strategic thinking and management development programs in North America, Europe, Hong Kong and China.

Professor Martinsons is an influential researcher on the management of businesses/organizations and has been a keynote speaker at meetings of both industry groups and scholarly societies, such as the International Association of Management. According to Google Scholar, Martinsons has authored 4 of the 10 most cited articles on Chinese management.
