Mario Luzi

Mario Luzi (20 October 191428 February 2005) was an Italian poet.

He was appointed to the Italian Senate as a senator-for-life by President of the Republic Ciampi in October 2004. He won the Aristeion Prize in 1991 for his work Frasi e Incisi di un Canto Salutare.

Mario Luzi was born in Florence (Italy). His parents came from Amiata and He lived his youghtness to Castello (Italy), where he started his primary school. In Florence he studied at the liceo classico Galileo, and still in Florence he got his degree in French literature with a final dissertation about François Mauriac.

It is an important period from Luzi; during it he met poets such as: Piero Bigongiari, Alessandro Parronchi, Carlo Bo, Leone Traverso, and the critic Oreste Macrì.

His first book (La barca) has been published in the 1935 and in the 1938 he started to teach in the high schools (Parma),(San Miniato) and (Roma).

In the 1940 he published Avvento notturno. In the 1945 he went back to Florence and there he taught at the liceo scientifico. In the 1946 he published Un brindisi e Quaderno gotico, in the n. 1 of Inventario, nel 1952 Onore del vero, Principe del deserto e Studio su Mallarmé. In the 1955 he started to teach at University (French literature) Facoltà di Scienze Politiche di Firenze.

Between 1963 and 1983 he published many books such as: Nel magma, (1963); Dal fondo delle campagne (1965); Semiserie (1979), Reportage (1985).

In the 1978, with the book Al fuoco della controversia he got the Viareggio's prize (Premio Viareggio).

In the October 2004 he was appointed to the Italian Senate as a senator-for-life by President of the Republic Ciampi.

His last book has been published for the famous literary cafè Giubbe Rosse; L'avventura della dualità, Firenze 2003.


He died to Florence just some months later, the 28th February 2005.
