Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is a recently announced sports game by Sega and Nintendo,[3] and the first official game featuring both Mario and Sonic The Hedgehog, Nintendo and Sega's former rival mascots, along with other characters from their respective series. It is set for release on both the Wii and Nintendo DS, and is the official game of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.[4]
Mario, Sonic, Luigi, Knuckles, Yoshi and Tails are confirmed playable characters and more will be announced.[5] The game is officially licensed by the International Olympic Committee through exclusive licensee International Sports Multimedia.[5] According to IGN, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto is supervising the project.[2]
However, according to recent news on IGN, the game or one of its two versions may be being developed by TOSE.
[edit] Gameplay
The gameplay is currently unknown, but is confirmed to use Wii Remote and the Nintendo DS stylus to the full potential. The game is set to take place at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, and will feature the official venues for sporting events during the Games.
“ | Innovative usage of the Wii and DS control systems to maneuver a favorite character will allow players to race the likes of Mario and Sonic down the 100m track, engage in exhilarating rallies in table tennis and churn water in a swimming heat, all while competing for the much sought after gold medal.[5] | ” |
In a more recent interview, Judo was confirmed as one of the sports featured.[4]
